SEPTEMBER CENSUS RESULTS - HOW MANY MORE ?: 19th September 2016
Post date: 19-Sep-2016 14:23:12
The latest Help Refugees' census has revealed the highest recorded number of children living in the 'Jungle'. 1,179 children live in the camp, 1,022 are on their own. Last week a 14 year old child was killed attempting to reach his family in the UK. With an impending eviction, there is currently no plan in place for safe accommodation for the children in the camp.
On average 11 unaccompanied minors arrive in the Calais camp every single day. In the past month there has been a 51% increase in unaccompanied minors, the youngest is still 8 years old. Not one child has been brought to the UK under Dubs amendment despite it passing in May.
This month's census shows that there are now a staggering 10,188 people living in the camp. This illustrates a 12% increase in population from last month.
744 households in the 'Jungle' are reporting that they would like to stay in France but report issues such as a lack of accommodation, long waits and being told 'there is no space for you'.
We expect the camp to be evicted in the coming months, but in the mean time we desperately need food, tents, sleeping bags and winter clothes.
